simplest possible network, linux and winxp can't ping each other

Quick Question:

I have linux box and winxp connected through router, which is connected to WAN.

I am still a Newbie^2 with networking but: should linux and xp be able to ping each other? I thought they should, but that's not really the case. (They can both ping router)

I don't have any Samba thingy running or anything.

vague question.

did you ping by ip, or by name?

are both on dhcp, or static ip?

what are their ips?

-- connected through a router, which is connected to a WAN

-- is this a business network? i'm not sure on your network setup.
