Not any goodones that I know off. If you are going to use this with public access I do recommend that you update the RH9 box to fedora 2 or wait till the 8th and get fedora 3
There is securitity problems with RH9 in public enviroments. I was running RH9 and the box started acting funny so I thought that someone had done an exploit so I decided that I would just format and install fedora 2 and then I'd upgrade to FD3
The Ftp server you are runing is proftpd right? I used this until I formated. I have not had a chance to reinstall this. I am still trying to get all the updates for FD2
I know that I could read from the top, but what are your goals. Just learning and want to have everything, or what.
There is a tutorial on proftp on this site that helps. Also you might want to check out ssh-keygen to create ssh keys so passwords dont have to be entered.
I am planning on switching over to Debian from RedHat (Win2k Dual boot that I hardly use) although its proving alot more difficult than I thought it would be. Red Hat ran pretty much outta the box, I know its an older distros and in some ways the opposite kind of distros to Debian but it seems to be doing eveyrthing I want where as I cant even get X to work with my Debian box. The plan is to play around with this Debian box and get used to Debian before I use it for my main machine so I want to see how some basic things like network shares, ftp server, webserver etc
Ive managed to get ProFTP working sort of. I can connect and log in using username and password for a local account. But I cant log on using anon which is very very strange. Im sure its all down to user and group permissions and Im only starting to get used to working off a command line. Any ideas or some nice easy tutorials that you can point me to?
To upgrade a RH9 box to fedora is easy. Download the Cds and select to update, not a new install.
Fedora and RH are of the same layout, one just has new kernals and updates. The newer kernal has helped me out a lot.
I have turned all my RH9 boxes in to fedoras now as it. If you do this it will most likly fix alot of your troubles. You don't have to learn nothing new, its all the same commands and layout.
Did you get the ping by host name working
Any perticular reason that you not running X?
I have found that after about 9 months of command line, I like it better for some suff and some I use the redhat config stuff.
Some of the pros
2.6.5- kernal on the cd with upgrade to 2.8.?-
Samba 3.02-?
many more.......
I can send you 2 hosts files that you can copy and add. I can tell you exactly how to do this.
Send me an email to matthew at midgettmotorsports.com
I'll send you two emails back. One for elvis and one for workstation right.
Just copy them to a disk and put into your box and view them.
Are you running X on the red hat machine? If so call me on my cell 704-622-0405 or I'll call you and I'll go over the redhat network device control over the phone.
