Lightbulb Simple file sharing between UBuntu 12.04 and an old Xp machine

Hello, I'm having trouble with, what I thought to be a simple task, sharing files between a compaq laptop stuffed with 12.04 LTS and a old windows Desktop XP home Edition Sp2.

My idea was and still is to use the xp machine for backup as it has more Space on board. and I did not want to use SD,USB or other potable stuff anymore to transfer files To accomplish this I only wanted to use a Network cable between them. without placing a router between the two.

- The XP machine does not need internet;
- I only need to acces the Desktop from my Ubuntu laptop.

-I Used a crossed cable
-Have given both machines their own Ip adresses
-installed and configured samba

when I plugged in the cables the both say to be connected, but I cannot Ping from both machines (Time out messages in Cmd and sendmsg: operation not permitted from from Bash)

checked the cable with a Voltmeter and it apears to be fine, also checked Iptables, but I never touched it before so I everything should be "open" Right?

Can somebody shine a fresh light on this?

In order to do a direct connection you need a reverse patch-cord. That's different from the run-of-the-mill cables you find at stores. Ahh! You already did that :-) In addition, you need to set both machines network interfaces in the same network segment. Have you done it?

eh... what do you mean with "segment"?

Is that:

-Subnetmask? Both machines are on 255.255.255.0
-with Ip of the Xp machine set to 10.0.0.65 and the Ubuntu to 10.0.0.66

Thanks in advance
