shutting down linux from windows

i'm setting up a mp3 box running linux which is controlled via network by win98 on another machine . so far all is coming along however i know that you cant just pull the plug on linux (and its not an option to keep it running) and i've looked around and tried a suggestion to make the drives read only, which doesnt work because root gets remounted as r/w during the boot ... so i need to be able to shutdown from windows (the linux box doesnt have a keyboard or monitor) using telnet or vnc ...

any insight will be appreciated
Dave

They are really easy to set up ..
you can use bind8 or 9 and even configure it to be a configured nameserver for your intranet ...

What distri you got?

I used SuSE ... under SuSE you have a nameserverconfig. First, you set the nameserver to be your own machine ... localhost.

Next, you tell Linux to start bind at bootup (there is a file called rc.config ind the /etc directory. If its not there you simply need to edit your bootup scripts.

Now go to the /var/ driectory .. somewhere in there are files that describe your local LAN andthe Internet by resolving tables and vice versa (just plz don't ask me what they're called. I'm gonna set my nameserver up this weekend since I reinstalled my router. Either gonna wait till then or read the bind-HOW-TO. Thats where I took my information.)

The last thing to do is check the Nameserver with whois commands and tell every other machine on the net you have a nameserver ... thats it.

Sorry Dave ...

-> I mixed up two threads yesterday ..(I got a really bad I connegy with packetloss .. for what reason ever.)

If you wanna control your machine form another comuter, get yourself an SSH2 client an start the sshd on your linux box.

the you can shut it down from there .. thats what I do ..

mp3 server...

i use a linux box as an mp3 player/server in my car...

for safe shutdown.. install a journeling file system (rh7.2 for example uses ext3). if you kill the power, no problem. I also have a separate partition for the mp3 files that i mount read-only. no problem there.

as for telnet... search google for a win telnet client that has scripting support, then use the above mentioned login/script with this shutdown command:
halt -p
which will power down (if your mb supports APM and uses an ATX supply)
