Sharing my Internet Connection to W2K Server

Hi,

The 'How to' for IP Masqerade is pretty out of date. It does not have a section covering how to share your internet connection from your Linux box on your W2K Server box. I have successfully done it for my Win98 notebook. But W2K Server defies my attempts. I cannot even find out where to setup a gateway IP address.

Any pointers?

Thanks

David

what kind of gateway? if the only thing that has changed is the windows box then that naturally nothing to do with linux. you should use linux as a server tho, much mre reliable and striaght forward.

I am using MDK 8.2 with a Speedtouch ADSL modem I have setup the gateway IP to 192.168.99.1 and the DNS IP is 192.168.99.2 and there are the 2 other DNS IP addresses supplied by BT Openworld.

I went into the "Network and Dial-up Connections" in W2K selected the "Lan connection", "Internet Protocol", Selected "Properties", entered the gateway IP, DNS IPs for my Linux box then "Advanced..." ,"DNS" left the "Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes" as selected, also left "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" as selected. Clicked the "WINS" tab disabled the "Enable LMHOSTD lookup". "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" is selected. It warns me with a message "This connection has an empty WINS address. Do you want to continue?" I say 'Yes'. Then OK ,OK and all is OK. But it does not conenct to the gateway.

The Win98 notebook with the same settings (where it has them, clearly W2K has more settings) works fine.

Maybe the complication is that the W2K server is setup with it's own domain that my notebook connects to?

Posting to my own replay here. More information. I tried oing to the gateway from both W2k box and my Win 98 notebook. Both timeout! So how th eWin98 notebook is'seeing' th eInternet through th eLinux box I do not know. But what it tells me is that th eIPTABLES I got from Griffon26 is maybe not working..

I saw Griffon26's post on how IPV4 forwarding was not set to TRUE in the /etc/sysconfig/network file, so I changed that and rebooted. But clearly that is not enough. Any ideas?

In desperation i used the Mandrake Control Centre to enable Internet Connection Sharing. Big mistake, now my Win 98 noteobook can no longer connect. I realise now that it uses DHCP and the IPTABLEs script uses fixed IP addresses. Not sure how to undo this oops. One thing I have learnt, don't use MCC.
Also rapidly learning that no matter how many people say Linux has improved vis a vis configuration that you still need to read Man pages for days to get it to use anything not standard like a Speedtouch USB ADSL modem. I have been trying to get it set up for 4 weeks now, most of my time spent on it.

If you send me an e-mail I can reply to, I'll try to help you.
I tried replying to the previous mail, but the address isn't working.

Or if possible: irc (#linux.nl on irc.quakenet.org) or icq (uin 41038728)
Both of these are faster.

If we find a solution, we'll post it to this thread.

The problem with anything added by a distribution is that it is sometimes going to break if you make changes based on general linux instructions.

For example if you install something from source, your distro's package manager will often be working with incorrect dependencies.

That is why I decided to avoid anything distro specific like the plague, this includes package managers as well as configuration tools. An added advantage is that you'll get to see how things really work and which files control what. You'll also have a better chance of getting non-standard things to work.
