Hi friends ,

I have a linux workstation on which I have files I need to to share with win98 and winnt computers .

I tried doing that using the samba server. In the samba server config file, I have entries for hostname allowed as the ip's of the windows computers I need to allow access to.
eg. allow hosts 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.3
i.e 192.168.0.1,2,3 are win machines which need to access the linux server. I have also set the share directory to /usr/local/shared

when I start the samba server I see the linux server in the n/w neighbourhood of the win machines and when I try to connect to the linux machine I get a box for username / password. On entering the username / password for a user registered on the linux machine , I get an error "This account is not authorised for remote login"
I am not understanding this error.

Please advise

Thanks for your time,
Ashwin

Hello there.
Might be a long shot, but as far as I remember, Win 98 and NT4 with SP3 onwards (I think) use encrypted passwords, where as Samba defualts to plain text passwords.
There is an option there somewhere in the smb.conf file to change Samba to use encrypted (I have never changed it to try) or there is a registry hack to change the win comps back to plain.
Might not be your problem at all, but I thought I would mention it.

Sharing files to win clients

Another problem when it promts you with a login, is you'r security setting, in the samba.conf you can set the security level to share
Then you would be able to login without passwords.
A good program for Samba admin when you'r new to Samba is Webmin (It comes along with Mandrake)
Use it a cupple of times and observe what it does to you'r samba.conf
Hope it could be of any help
