Sharing files over a LAN between Linux only systems.

New to Linux and have recently dumped Windows completely.

I have been playing with sharing files over our LAN between my bro and I. We both strictly run Linux only and opted to go with NFS but since he has a laptop and isnt on the network 24/7 like myself, its annoying to have to shutdown and restart the service everytime he connects.

We are thiking of moving to Samba but everything I read is about Linux to Windows...

So my question is, is Samba reserved for Linux between Windows or can it be used for strictly Linux to Linux systems?

Samba can be used for strictly Linux to Linux computers, I actually run a file server in such a way simply because it's easier for me to set up than an NFS setup, plus if people come over with a Windows laptop or something they can jump right on. There are issues though, as the samba file system does NOT treat samba mounts exactly the same as it does if you open a samba mount with a windows system. For instance, they seem to ignore create and directory masks.

Thank you everyone.

mritch, I think that is what I am going to use...Samba is just a lot more then what I need...there wont be anyone with Windows on my LAN so I dont need support for it at all, going to look into soft/timeout option on NFS.

Thanks again everyone.
