setup Xserver for remote access

I am a relative newbie, and have somehow found myself administering a new RH9 print/file server at uni. At the moment is seems to be running fine (although with belt and braces), but some of the users would like to be able to connect to it accross the network using a graphical interface. When connecting to the main UNIX servers here, we use Hummingbird Xceed, and I guess that correct configuration of the X server would enable this. Is this the case, and if so, how do I enable it? I also have a firewall to contend with...

Cheers,

Dave

look into using ssh and it's ability to do X11 forwarding. You shouldn't have to make any changes to the X server.

you'll have to configure sshd on your RH9 server to allow X11 forwarding and use the -X flag when running the ssh client. Without further configuration, you won't be able to 'su' after connecting and still have x-clients work(though this may not be a problem if no one plans to 'su' after connecting).

When using ssh in this manner, you shouldn't have to manually set the $DISPLAY environment variable or add hostnames using the 'xhost + ....' command.

I'm a bit confused by how your talk about the Unix system fits in with what you're trying to do here. But here's a start.

Here's the most basic way, which almost certainly works already on your system.

-Remote computer needs XFree86 installed. (X-Server).
-The RH9 server needs sshd installed, and must be running sshd service, and must have port 22 open on the firewall.
-On the remote machine, do 'ssh -X ip.of.RH9.server'
-then do 'kmail &' to start kmail, 'mozilla &' to start mozilla, etc. The program will run on the RH9 server and the display will output to the remote machine.
