setup intranet/internet DNS

Hi, there.

I want to setup intranet dns server.
I the beginner in this work.

For example, my external registered domain:
sub.domain.com

Connection to the Internet is executed through a single gateway: proxy (squid) and smtp (postfix), and that`s all.
And no changes in the future are planned.
Since my organization does not give any services through the Internet (and what to do? .

Therefore there are essentially important two questions:

1. As it is better to make:
To name the intranet domain sub.domain.com (use view "internal/external"
for concealment of an internal network)
or to choose a name which is obviously not existing in the Internet, for example org.localnet ?

2. Whether it is possible to place intranet dns server on this gateway ?
If I setup a caching server to forward DNS requests to an outside DNS server (my ISP)
and setup a master authoritative server for local intranet DNS requests.

Thanks a lot.

u can achive this mission using both way, however I'll suggest you to use the second way. The reason is:-
1. one day maybe your company will offer services to internet, like vpn, web conference and etc, using 2nd method is transparent to users.
2. for expansion and compatibility to others branches(who know?)
3. More standard.

The 1st way is working, but personally I still prefer 2nd way.
Regards,
Ks

Hello, sorry to bring up this thread again

I already set up a Bind DNS server in our company network, using it to forward DNS requests to the ISP's DNS server, also to provide DNS requests for local intranet.

But the problem is, whenever a problem occured on the internet connection (quite often because I'm in a remote area), the DNS won't work, rejecting DNS requests (timeout) even for our intranet address.

Is there any way to make the server respond even when the internet connection doesn't exist?
