Setting up Samba with SuSe 8.1 and Win 2K/Win XP Pro
 

Hi folks,

I'm a newbie to Linux (but have had prior
experience with Solaris a while back).I recently got
a MCSA in Win2K So I'm dangerous now :-) Lately I've
been doing bench work (service and installs) on Win 95
through Win XP Pro PCs. I need to go back to my UNIX
roots before I go too crazy. Can you say "reboot"?

Can anyone point me to a "HOW-to-do-it Samba for Dummies"?

I've got a small network at home with dual boot Win 2K
and Linux systems. Here's my config:

Dual boot Win 2K adv Server/Redhat 7.2 Server

Win XP Pro/SuSe 8.1 client

Win 2K Pro/SuSe 8.1 client.

I'd like to share the resources (printers and files)
between both Operating systems.

Is there an easy to understand doc (maybe step-by-step even)
that shows you how to setup the Samba server and
the client?

Does Samba work only in a Windows workgroup,
or can it work within a Windows 2K domain as well?

Are there 2 sets of Samba binaries (one for the server and
the other for the client)?

I did download some Samba binaries from the Samba website, and my SuSe 8.1 does have what appears to be a Samba client within YAST2).Now I'd like to know what I'm doing without shooting myself in the foot too many times. But that's all about learning.....

One last thing, I'm impressed with SuSe ver 8.1. It will really help those who want to migrate from a Windows world (GUI users) to Linux and/or those that want to coexist in both worlds.

This should get you started. I'd first try to get the workgroup thing working. If that works, move on. Basically once you installed the bins you only need to start the samba service (there should be a file in /etc/init.d). Of course you need to adjust the file smb.conf first. That file configures samba. It's pretty self explanatory and there is a whole bunch of documentation for it, too. There is one thing you have to look at. You need to add samba passwords to your users and there is a prob with winxp acessing samba. Microsoft decided to change something again in XP without documenting it. You need to put something in the registry. Search in google for "sign seal samba". I don't remember the exact registry key but you'll find something. If that is changed, Samba serves XP like a charm ;)
