setting up openldap in place of nis

hi,
we have a small network of about 10 machine at our lab....till now we were using nis for authentation....but after reading a lot about how nis is inherently insecure and anyone using a sniffer can get all the passwds.....i am thinking of using openldap based authentation system....i will be using ldap only for authentation ,no fancy directory services or anything.....i read the documentation on tldp .....but there are no clear cut documentation for this,i can get pass the installation of software part, but then i m lost......can someone plz help me......i have to setup only one master node.....use it only for authentation......encryption of login, password information when it is passed on network....thanx in advance for your help.......
