Unhappy Setting up LAN

I want to set up a mini lan in my house. I jus wanna connect 2 computers. One is running red hat linux 8 and the other one Fedora 4.

I tried setting up the network in windows xp and it worked quite well. It also worked when both computers running rh linux 8.

The problem is, the kernel 2.6 ( running on FC 4) is not accepting the packets sent by rh linux 8. FC 4 sends a ARP packet to rh linux 8, and rh linux 8 replies with its mac address, but kernel 2.6 is not accepting them.

Does kernel 2.6 have any sort of firewall not present in 2.4 series ??

Why is it not receiving any packets??

does it involve any configuration in iptables??

Kindly help.

Thanking you in advance.

Only two computers - are you using a router or a crossover cable? If you're using a router are you using dhcp to configure ip addresses or setting them statically? I always set mine static and never had a problem.

These might be dumb questions:
Is the network name the same on both?
Are both ip addresses on the same subnet? (netmask)

Can you post the output of ifconfig from each.

I am using a crossover cable.. I set the address statically. is it necessary that i add a gateway or somethinng like that??

It works ver wel with kernel 2.4 series.. but with 2.6 , i found it almost impossible..

The LEDs at the ethernet card blink, signifying a data transfer but, i cant even PING..

I jus set the ip address of the NIC and thats all was what i did. But it refuses to work.

Kindly help nybody.

In addition to ifconfig, could you also post the output of route as well after the interfaces are configured properly?

Start sniffing the network interfaces in normal mode as root (like tcpdump -e) at both ends, then try ping:
- loopback
- own IP - not loopack
- one of the hosts from the other.
Make sure you direct these packets through the questioned interfaces

Please post the dump, and the output of arp -n if you can.
Thanks

Regardless of your distro, you should be able to do the following to connect 2 linux computers:

If your switch supports DHCP (Most do nowadays by default):
- Make sure the switch has enough IP's to lease, if there is a MAC filter add the physical addresses of the Linux computers' network interfaces
- run ifconfig eth0 up (replace eth0 with actual name of network interface)
- dhcpcd eth0 OR dhclient eth0 (depending if you have dhcdcd or dhclient installed, replace th0 with actual name of interface)
- The systems should be able to talk to each other (Assuming no firewalls are active, etc)
- Check route, arp -n and ifconfig.

The connection will not start on boot. For that, you will need to modify distro specific files. If you have further problems, please reply.
