Setting Up apache w/ Netgear MR814

Help!

I will try to post as much info as possible. I am trying to run an apache web server on an old pentium II/350. Apache seems to start/run fine. My problem is that I can not access the web server from using the dynamically assigned IP address from my ISP that supplies my DSL (verizon).

I figured it was verizon blocking port 80. So I configured apache to listen to 8000 instead. When I try to access either 127.0.0.1:8000 or 192.168.0.4:8000 apache responds w/ a webpage. When I type in the Internet P address that is dynamically assigned w/ port 8000 I get connection refused. I am using a Netgear MR814 router with a Westell WireSpeed modem (model C90-36R516-01). I have the Router configured to forward incoming requests to port 8000 to 192.168.0.4:8000. I have even tried to put my linux box in the DMZ to see if it would work.

I was hoping to use a service like dyndns to track my IP address but I know that if I can't get the webserver to work right I have no shot of adding that into the works.

I don't think that apache is seeing the request for the page from outside my LAN because when I check the error log it does not show up but the requests from inside my LAN do.

Any insight into this I would appreciate.

Thanks, Gene

Welcome to LQ.

I don't think these netgear routers support loopback natting so you can't access your external IP from inside if you like. Try aasking a friend to do it or try from a web proxy like guardster.

Thanks for the help.

Worked like a charm. I did not even consider NAT would not allow loopback.
