Setting Up A Caching DNS Server on a Private Network

Hi there --

I have completed downloading the BIND software onto a system that will server as the DNS server, and I am now ready to configure the it. The type of server I want to create is a caching server. The reason for this is I want the system to resolve hostnames exclusively within a private network, 192.168.0.x, and the server will NOT have access to the Internet. I know I will need to modify the /etc/named.conf and other files but I am not familiar with what settings are needed. What tools and/or entries can I use to complete the configuration of the server? Thanks.

You will need to create zone files. http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/DNS-HOWTO.html is probably one of the best HOWTO's on the net. I suggest you read over that.

I know there is also a DHCP/DNS private network suse9 virtual machine out there that is built for a private 192.168.0.X network. I'll look and see if I have a copy, it is around 500 megs compressed(it also has additional server tools left unconfigured). If you get to a place where it just want do what you want, post back and I'll drop you a link(I have to find it).

Found it, I just forgot which server I had it sitting on. Email wbishop@hhsys.org me with where you want it and I'll upload it thursday. I can guarantee that it works reliably, I'm running an imaging network off of it, and it gets hit HARD. You'll need to change the timeouts because I have them set for 30 minutes so the next machines can get the address quicker. You can also modify it to use any address range, but it's ready for you pretty much right out of the box.

If you like it, make it available for someone else, I spent no short amount of time getting it perfect.
