Correct me if wrong but you only need an MX entry if the mail server is on a different ip to the dns entry - in this chaps case he has both http and mail on the same box so just the dns entry should suffice.

ok here is where I am now....

Installed Postfix up and running
Installed postfixadmin and got it running
Have static IP with my own domain and per instructions MX pointing to my IP

i went into postfix admin and added my mailbox, but I cannot access it from outlook. In my account options of outlook, i tried mail.mydomain.com and when that didnt work I tried the IP of my server and that didnt work. how do i get incoming mail and access it from my desktop?

everything looks as if it should be working... but when I try to connect to my mail server I get an error saying the connection was refused. I have all email ports forwarded to my server but still no luck. I can send outgoing messages from postfixadmin, but cannot connect to my POP3 account.

HELP!!!!!!!!

Postfix is an MTA (Message Transfer Agent) and has nothing to do with reading your e-mail from a mailbox with an MUA like Outlook.

With the above in mind, have loaded and configured either a POP3 or IMAP server (or even both) so that you can read your e-mail. Personally, I prefer IMAP.

first of all... its not avaliable for mandrake... thanks but I really dont feel like starting again from scratch. qmail sounds great but isnt avaliable in my mandrake package manager.

i have the following:
cyrus-imap
postfix
postfixadmin

when i try logging into my imap server it seems to try but with no success. if i put the wrong username email then it says mailbox doesnt exist. then when i put in a proper one it says failed. i use the usernamme and password and mailbox i set up with postfix admin but no avail... ready to give up for good.

VERY BLEEPING FRUSTRATED!!! AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGG!!!!! KLAJFlksdjfkl;asjdl;fk

you know what...

F%*^ THIS BULL#*%%!!!!

linux is such a frikkin quagmire... too much crap... to many stupid things to configure... especially with the email stuff... good lord. i hate the following:

LINUX
MANDRAKE
POSTFRIKKINFIX
CYRUS-IMAP
LDMAP (WHAT THE HELLI SHTAT??)
MYSQL
AND EVERYTHING ELSE INVOLVED WITH IT!!!

GO MICROSOFT... GO BILL GATES... WINDOWS FOR LIFE!!!! DOWN WITH CRAPPY LINUX

I have spent the past few days accomplishing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. if this was windows i would be done already. bite me linux. i am sick of your stupid conf files, databases, scripts, and all the other crap that comes along with your stupid OS. go ahead and get mad like its my fault, but it shouldnt take a goddarn rocket scientist to install a simple mail server.

AKL:SJGKL:ASDJGKL:SADJGL:SKDJG

and if you dont think i gave it an honest try.. read this entire thread. I have spent days here and on websites with howtos and tutorials with no success... i hate linux.

I thought so. That's why I posted my reply.

Install and configure the IMAP server that meets your requirements. There are a few I can think of - dovecot, courier-imap or cyrus-imap. Since you claim to be a newbie, I would suggest that you consider dovecot. I have heard nothing but postive comments about dovecot on the Fedora list.

The only difference between fetchmail and an MUA like Outlook is you can't read e-mail with fetchmail. Fetchmail (like the name implies) is used to only "fetch" mail from a remote POP3 or IMAP server. Also, fetchmail is typically called from a cronjob, but has the capabilites to run as a daemon process.

Seeing Karupts last reply reminds me of the lyrics "another one bites the dust"

Guess this thread is closed.

You are absolutely right. Linux is a pain. Its sucks for configuring when you first start out, but believe it gets better with time. I spend 3 hours trying to setup a Win2k ADS server with a firewall with IIS and could not ge it to work I had the same thing up in linux in 10 minutes.
But yeah like Scowles said try dovecot, or courier-imap but stay away from cyrus if you still decide to go for it.

I guess My timing is impeccable

Here is a really easy way of getting an up and running mail server with a webmail client (horde):

This can be used on many dists, from what i remember there is one for mandrake 9.1 but should also work with 10.0:

Hope that helps,

Luke

Talking

Hi everyone... I am sorry I wrote that in a fit of frustration. To be honest, I dont even remember being as insane as that post!! lol... thanks for the help, and I will look into all the things posted here, and get back to you all. I love linux, it is just hard sometimes. Especially for someone that had soley been in a windows environment for 10 years. Ive been working on linux since January.

My core problem is that I have set up this stuff set up now in mandrake 10:

samba server
apache server serving 3 PHP websites (mysql)
vsftp server

all installed using the PACKAGE MANAGER, then configured to get them working by me with a little help here and reading tutorials/howtos. My main problem is that I get into what I call "dependency hell" when I try to compile a tarball. And not everything is in an easy RPM. So in turn I kind of get stuck with Mandrake Package Manager and there is no q-mail or other email and imap solutions other than cyrus and postfix. I dont want to install another distro and have to go back and re set up all the conf files and what not to get samba, apache, ftp, etc... so I got really frustrated.

But I am over it now, I hope. And will continue trying to get this mail server going. The thread remains alive and well.

sorry again,
karupt
