Unfortunately I did not get a chance to try any more last night and it will be Thursday before I get another chance.
Having read the link above it does not look good for my DWL-120. I have a D-Link DWL-G510 PCI card in another PC that I could move, is this likly to work.
Alternatively if I have to buy another wireless card, PCI or USB, what would be a good card to get for Unbuntu 9.10.

In your first post said USB Wireless DWL-120+, and I was talking about acx driver, witch is not included in Ubuntu 9.10 anymore.

You should go to Ubuntu web site and look for "compatible hardware", they have a list.
Well I seem to be on to a winner, or at least under windows. My USB DWL-120+ was upstairs in my dual boot XP/Ubuntu PC giving me 22mbs link. My PCI DWL-G510 was in the dining room struggling to get a link and then only 2-5mbs. So I swapped them and I now have 54mbs upstairs and 22mbs down stairs. Unfortunately this is all under XP.
I still don't seem to be able to Ubuntu to work wireless though and the DWL-G510 appears to be on their supported list.
If you're missing the Network Manager panel applet, then (in Gnome) make sure that your panel contains the Notification Area applet. (Right-click on the panel to access the "Add to panel" command.) The NM applet can't be added directly to the panel, but is automatically part of the Notification Area. If you already have a Notification Area, but still no applet, then make sure the applet is installed. Just bc you have Network Manager does not mean you have the panel applet. Installing network-manager-gnome and restarting your system should make the panel applet appear in the Notification Area. (Instructions are needed for non-Gnome desktops.)
According to Synaptic Package Manager network-manager and network-manager-gnome are loaded, i.e they have a green square.
