server question: subdomaining gotchas

While howtos would be appreciated, what I'm asking for are gotchas

The situation/background: (skim, skip)

My institution, let's say M has a website- a www.m.com style
I'm on a project to create a special youth section. At the moment it's in a separate folder- www.m.com/youth but this doesn't allow us much control over it. We've built our own server and are currently setting it up. This is so we can run our own show, as it were. So- I realize that we need to set up the domain to be something like youth.m.com
How do we do this, since we didn't set up the domain? We have the full blessing of the head dudes, but they're not very tech savy.

Tech Summary:

Existing domain- our organization's.
Want to set up "youth.m.com" hosted off our own server.

While howtos would be appreciated, what I'm asking for are gotchas

So- What do I need to know? What hang ups do I need to look out for? What do I need to read up on?

Thanks!

Find out:
* Who runs the DNS for m.com (so you can submit a request for youth.m.com)
* If there are any more IP addresses available (so you know if you can give youth.m.com it's own IP, or if you have to proxy through m.com's site)
* Who runs the firewalls (so you can make a request to allow traffic to youth.m.com)

Setting up the actual site is pretty easy, but depending on the answers to the above 3 questions, you might be able to use a separate IP, or you might require the maintainers of m.com to change their configuration to proxy to your site.

Thanks chort!

:Re the firewalls- you talking about our own machines firewall? I have a feeling you're talking about other firewalls.

:Re the other stuff- thanks. Now we just have to track the relevant person down.
