My internal net is 192.168.*.* and I CAN access my web server from the internet since I have set up port forwarding - no problems at all. I can access my web server on its LAN 192.168 address but if I put my internet address, 78.32.*.* into a url the server is not found IF connected via my LAN - just says server not found error.

If I connect a modem to a pc and put http address 78.32.*.* in my browser I can connect to my webserver on my LAN which is perfectly fine.

Somehow it is because I am accessing my internal server via an external IP (router)...

Please can you tell me what I forgot? I'm on Centos5, if that is relevant.

i think this is perfectly normal. the reason you can't access the server from LAN by using internet ip is because the packets can't find their way to server.

when you are connecting through the modem it is like coming from internet (to make sure unplug yout lan cable from the pc connected to modem, dial the modem and access using the 78.32.*.* ip and it should work. but if you try to access using the 192.168.*.* ip it should not work.)

Google for 'NAT Loopback' and the model of your router and see if there's any instructions available for switching this on.
