After a number of weeks trying to solve this strange issue, I thought perhaps someone could point me in the right direction.

Our network is composed of a Windows 2003 domain controller. All workstations on the network are members of this windows domain. Then, there is a standalone samba 3 server, which is not a member of the domain. This is where the problem arises.

Any time any of the computers connect to this box, there is a serious lag, or delay before the server becomes available. For example, if someone tries to access the samba server via a UNC path, there is a 20-30 second delay before access is granted. If drive mappings are set up, any time "My Computer" is accessed (after a period of long inactivity), it lags for about 20-30 seconds before all the drives pop up.

My guess is that windows is waiting for a timeout because of incompatible communication of some kind. I've tried samba 2 and samba 3 with the same results. The CPU and memory resource on linux isn't to blame....the cpu averages less than 1% usage. If I connect to samba using a linux client, I don't get the lag at all.

I tried joining the linux/samba to the domain, but the "net join" command isn't found....I'm lost (there's another thread for that problem).

Is there a samba setting or a windows setting I can change to fix this lag? It's becoming a serious problem.

try adding the machine to the domain not just the samba client, stuff doesnt work like that in linux like in windows.

Linux=real servers and server applications
Windows=net join "catastrophy.net"
....joining domain

I'd like to, but I'm a bit confused on how to do that.

I was told I had to do a "net join <domain>" command, but when I type "net" at the linux command prompt, it says the command can't be found. I'm a bit confused. I installed the rpm's from samba.org's site. I've reinstalled all of the rpms. Same results. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here.

I recall doing the smbclient -j domain with earlier versions of samba, but I don't think that is going to help much in this case. I want to get the machine joined to active directory, but so far, that isn't going well.

Any tips or suggestions?
