sendmail service won't start

First of all, I know I post here a lot, but I'm learning.

I've set up a Mandrake 9 file/db/web server. I have samba doing domain authentication via winbind so I can access my web files from my windows workstation. I have mysql running, and have configured name based virtual hosts on apache. So far so good.

I can't get sendmail to send from my php script. When I do "service sendmail start" I get an ok, but when I do "service sendmail status" I get "sendmail dead but subsys locked". I haven't configured anything special...I just opted to install it during os installation.

I really don't care what I send with. This box sends, but doesn't receive. I've used sendmail, and it works. The main thing is getting it to work. A lot of people brag on postfix. Either way, I just need it to work!!

Thanks in advance,

Okay, I think I've figured it out. I did a "postfix start" then redirected php.ini to /usr/sbin/postfix. It works, so I'm happy.
