I am having a terrible few weeks. Argh. I run Red Hat 8.0 Professional for my server(DNS, samb, sendmail, etc). It is routing my home network(all Windows 2000 and XP) through a cable modem. All the Windows machines are running either Outlook or outlook express as an e-mail client. I know Linux fairly well, although I am hardly an expert. Here's my problem: I can recieve e-mail, but not send it from any of the Windows machines. When I try to send e-mail, I get the following error:
550 5.7.1 <blahblah@yahoo.com>... Relaying denied. IP name lookup failed [192.168.5.16]
I have looked everywhere on the web for a solution, but I am coming up empty. I'm fairly sure the answer lies somewhere in my sendmail configuration, although I cannot figure this out to save my life. E-mail is CRITICAL to me. I am going to college online and without e-mail, I'm dead, bottom line. Can anyone think of what the problem might be? Could anyone let me know some solutions you think I should try? I'd really appreciate it, everyone! Take it easy!
I take it you are running your OWN mail server then and are not using one provided by your ISP. I think what you need to do is edit the /etc/mail/access file and give your local PC's access to use it as a relay. eg
192.168 Allow
would allow mail from the 192.168 network. After editing the access file you must convert it to database format:
makemap hash /etc/mail/access.db < /etc/mail/access
My domain is bartlett-family.net and I already have that in the access file. Shouldn't that be enough? I will try to add the 192.168 subnet to the file. Then, I'll remake the db file. Should I add "192.168", "192.168.5", or "192.168.5.255"? Thanks for all your help!
192.168 on its own should let any hosts on your 192.168 network send e-mail. I don't think the domain is enough unless all your computers have that set as their hostname.
You definately need to makke the db file after changing the access file. (you may need to restart sendmail - to be honest I can't remember)
THAT DID IT!!! I've been racking my brains about this for days! David, you are the man. I can't thank you enough. Now I just have to concentrate on the Samba!
