sendmail and outlook 2000 and red hat 8 help please
Hi
i have setup a mail server using red hat 8.0 and sendmail.
i can send and receive mail from the server from the internet
i can send myself emails from a windows 2000 workstation on the LAN.
However, i want to be able to use microsoft outlook 2000 to access mail sent to someone@mydomain.com. The account someone has been created on the linux box. I can send mail to it from my windows 2000 workstation and i can receive mail from the linux box to the 2000 workstation which is great.
I have setup an email account on the windows 2000 workstation to access the mail server and retrieve mail for the account someone@mydomain.com. All of the tests pass except it fails on "log onto incoming mail server". Does anyone know why this would fail? I have checked my username and password and email address a lot of times and they are correct.
The other things that pass are: Establish network connection, find outgoing mail server, find incoming mail server and send test email message.
I have enabled both pop3 and imap.
When i try to setup the email client from the windows 2000 workstation i have only these options to choose from: ms exchange server, pop3, imap, http and addtitional server type (which is empty) and no smtp option
Do i have to be logged onto the 2000 workstation with the same username and password as on the linux box?
Good to see you in the right forum now! Did you, by any chance, respond to my post (which was in response to your post) in the other forum? lol, that's confusing...
Like I said, it sounds to me like there is a problem with either your setup (pop3 or imap, not both), or their is an account problem, such as a bad password or username. Elaborate and post some pertinent files here for us to look at.
My first thought is that is a problem with your MX records... What does DNS say about MX?
That could explain why you can send/recieve e-mail INSIDE your network, but not outside... Lemme know
sorry chris, i can send/receive email outside and inside the network. My problem is when i try to setup the windows 2000 workstation to receive mail from an account on the linux box.
i am not able to logon to the incoming pop server. It tells me to check my username, password and email address which i have checked a lot of times. Do you know what the following line in the sendmail.mc files means? Daemon_options(port=smtp, addr 127.0.0.1, Name=MTA) and if i put a dnl in front of it what are the ramifications?
That line should have a dnl in front of it. Basically, the dnl is a "comment out". If it is commented out, then sendmail is only listening on your loopback interface and will not be listening for smtp requests. Do that, rebuild sendmail.cf, and restart sendmail. Lemme know what happens.
Chris

Nah, leave it as dnl and 127.0.0.1. That's weird. As far as having the same username and password (you mentioned this in anoth thread) on your Windows 2000 machine, that's not necessary. That is only useful if you are running samba. I'll think it over and get back later.
chris, did some more testing and it seems that when i telnet servername 110 and 25 i get connection refused, yet i can send and receive mail over the internet.
How do i get my ports to work? I have enabled ipop3 in the ipop3 file and i have restarted xinetd. Help!!!
Did you figure it out? I am having the same problem as well. We have Sendmail, IMAP, Cyrus for authentication. We want to be able to use Outlook as well until we migrate off of windows.
We are using port 25 for mail and ports 143 and 389.
I can get a an inbox but none of the other folders show up. Did any of the folders show up (like sent, trash, etc)?
