Send mail configuration problem

Send Mail
I have configured send mail in my machine as per your article
http://www.linuxworld.com/linuxworld...eek_1.html.But still it does not work.
When i try to send a mail using pine or sendmail it gives me an eror saying that /usr/sbin/sendmail
is not a valid directory or file. But i am able to locate sendmail in /usr/sbin.But it is linked with
/var/qmail/bin/sendmail but this qmail directory does not exist not existing.Could this be the problem. What shall i do,
1.Shall i remove this link
2. Is this qmail link necessary?????

Saravanan

Eh ?

Hi ,

ReInstall sendmail and related packages (ofcourse after using find command to verify if sendmail program is indeed not present).

What you are seeing about the qmail directory is some sort of sendmail program that qmail program installs for compatibility.

Xanthium.

Dear Xanthium
Nice to see ur reply.I will tell u the exact problem.Send mail is properly installed there is no doubt abt that i have checked using
rpm -q -a | grep sendmail command. It gave me the following packages.

sendmail -cf-8.9.3-20
sendmail 8.9.3.20 i also checked out
for the m4 tables it was also installed.

When i use "locate sendmail" or when i use "whereis sendmail"
it shows /usr/sbin/sendmail.but when i go to /usr/sbin directory i find that the sendmail is just a broken link to qmail(keeps blinking in red).I am not sure how it happend.Intially when i tested sendmail i founf sendmail.cf was not installed,so i installed that rpm.But i dont know why this broken link is bothering a lot.
Intially sendmail was installed by someoneelse so i am not aware what that person did at that time to get this broken link. Can u tell me how to proceed further

Qmail prob

Hi ,

I think i made it clear in my previous post itself that it is caused due to qmail software. Qmail actually asks u to uninstall sendmail before installing qmail. Now qmail also creates some sort of program (iam not sure if its wrapper or what ) which is what ur seeing ! i think the previous guy had installed qmail.

So the only way to procedd is uninstall Qmail ..... if its already uninstalled then remove the dead link by the rm command and if ur in for bad luck then u will have to reinstall sendmail again.

Want my honest suggestion : If ur not the adventurous type then reinstalling the whole OS would be fine for u ( NOT THE BEST OPTION )
