Selecting the right email solution
 

Hi,

I need some advice on how best to continue with my email... I work away from Home often, so although I can see my new emails using a web interface I cannot access my email archive (It's on my PC at home). Even at home I now have problems. I have a Linux server & my PC is dual booted. I spend most of my time in Linux, but my email is still in Outlook on the Windows boot.

So, now is the perfect time to reorganise my email.. Any suggestions would be appreciated, along with any things I should be careful about.

Requirements. (My current feelings)

1. To store my emails on the Linux server.

2. To be accessable from a client that can run on Windows & Linux
(I am prepared to drop the windows requirement)

3. To enable access to my emails remotely, from a laptop on the internet.

So additional requirements, suggestions, warnings please...

Your describing my setup exactly.

I use:

Postfix (MTA) : There's no need to change to Postfix if you have already configured sendmail to your needs.
Dovecot ( IMAP ) IMAP makes all the difference as the mail is kept on the server.
Squirrelmail ( Webmail )

The main part is switching form POP to IMAP.

I've heard of postfix & Squirrelmail, but Dovecot is new to me. I'd suspected dropping POP3 for IMAP was part of the answer.
