See windows share when linux boots first.

Hi.

I have an odd problem with samba. When I start my linux box and the Windows machines on the lan is already online, I can connect and transfer files, however in the case that my linux box runs first, and the windows XP then comes online later on, I cant see it using eigther konqueror or nautilus.

If I try to use the command line:

smbclient -L Master

I can see that the computer "Master" is online, I can mount it, and on that way transfer my files as nessesary. But why cant Nautilus or konqueror manage to refresh the connected computers?? Is this a bug, or am I missing something?

Anyone having the same problems?

It sounds like your not connected. Go to the command line and type
$ mount <smb-mount-point>
This should work with no other arguments provided you've got it in your fstab and have the owner option set.

As far as I know, Nautilus or konqueror won't refresh a connection that isn't made, and it won't be made if you boot the client before the server, classic problem.

Hi again.

What I meant was, that I am able to mount the samba shares even if my linux box is booted first, but nautilus and konqueror doesn't mount samba shares when u browse them. So for me to use konqueror to browse the shares I have to mount them first, and that isn't nessecary if the windows box is started first. Then its just as simple as writing smb:/ in konqueror, and start browsing. If linux is booted first nothing shows up.

This is a problem, if for instant Im on a network, where I dont know the network computer names or ip, because then I have to manually find them, mount them, and start browsing. In windows I just turn on the computer, enter the network neighbourghood, and start browsing, this behavior must be availible to a linux computer running samba and konqueror right, I mean it does this if the windows machines is turn on previosly to linux.

Now Im wondering if I have to set something in the smb.conf file, perhaps som Wins server support or something. I dont have the big inside in setting this up, so I dont know if, and what I should tangle to get this right.

Regards

Araldit

Ok I understand. I don't know of a way in linux to do a mount "on use" the way windows does it, though I can see why it would be useful.

Edit, take a look at the automount daemon. I have never configure it, but we use it at work.
