secure. vs www. ssl apache config

I've noticed some sites flip to https://secure.doughmain.com from http://www.doughmain.com when they go secure. some stay www and do https://www.doughmain.com

What is the reasoning behind the choice?

The answer is also serious: when you register a domain, you can assign whatever subdomains you want to it. It just so happens that most domains have the `www' subdomain. Some want a separate domain for secure things (such as `secure').

All that matters practically is that a different protocol is used (https) for secure transfers.
