Question samba stuck after un-docking the notebook

Once I mount samba drive it is essential to un-mount before un-docking the notebook, otherwise I samba is not working any more.

Today, I forgot to un-mount samba drive before going to a meeting. Now. I'm back at my desk, and my notebook is in the docking station.

1) I can't access the samba drive

2) I can't mount samba drive. If I try to do so, the terminal becomes unresponsive, Ctrl+C does not work either, must close the terminal.
Code:
[boris@E7440 ~]$ sudo mount -t cifs //smb.nxdi.nl-cdc01.nxp.com/home /mnt/NXDIsmb -o uid=1000,gid=100,credentials=/root/samba.credentials
[sudo] password for boris:
3) I can't un-mount samba drive. If I try to do so, the terminal becomes unresponsive, Ctrl+C does not work either, must close the terminal.
Code:
[boris@E7440 ~]$ sudo umount /mnt/NXDIsmb
[sudo] password for boris:
How to recover from this?

The only way that I know is to reboot the computer. Is there a better way?

Actually, after 15-20 min, while I was writing this post, samba came back to life and I can access the drive again.

What is going on here?

How to improve the time needed to reestablish the connection?

I'm trying out gvfs now. In fact, it performs much better. When switching from LAN to WiFi, samba location is accessible within 20-30 seconds...

Code:
[boris@E7440 ~]$ gvfs-mount smb://smb.nxdi.nl-cdc01.nxp.com/home
Password required for share home on smb.nxdi.nl-cdc01.nxp.com
User [boris]:
Domain [SAMBA]:
Password:
[boris@E7440 ~]$ ll /run/user/1000/gvfs/
total 0
drwx------. 1 boris boris 0 Jan 17 17:54 'smb-share:server=smb.nxdi.nl-cdc01.nxp.com,share=home'
