Question Samba resolving names for Windows?

I have a RH7 and a Win2K machine networked together.

I can ping both machines and also use the Net from both machines so everything at this point would seem fine, but...

when I shutdown samba, I can no longer ping the Linux machine by it's name.

Would this mean that samba is resolving local names?

thanks

Harry

The Windows machine has to have some way to identify the linux machine. If the Linux box isn't identified by the Windows hosts file, or by the DNS server that the windows box uses then it falls back on nmb, which is provided by Samba.
