samba read-only problem

I have a RedHat 9 server with Samba installed. I'm having a problem with files in my shared folder opening as read-only for different users.

All I want is a simple wide-open file share where a group of users can save and modify any of the files located there. Right now if Jim saves a file, the file becomes read-only for his assistant Tami.

Here is the [share] portion of smb.conf

[shared]
comment = Shared network files
path = /shared
read only = no
public = yes
writeable = yes
create mode 0777
directory mode = 0777
force directory mask = 0777

What am I missing? Is there a difference between "create mode" and "create mask" commands? I've seen both commands in different postings. Should I be using "create mask" rather than "create mode".

Thanks in advance.

Should "force directory mask" also be 0777 or should it be like "umask" and be 0000 to give no restrictions?

oops. i may have solved my own problem.

the problem may have been as simple as adding an equal sign which i accidentally omitted in my original file.

i added the following line to the [shared] portion of smb.conf

create mask = 0777

at the same time, i removed the "create mode" line.

i've run chmod -R 777 /shared/* to reset all permissions in the shared directory and it seems to be working so far.

i'll run this for a few days and see if the problem is curred.
