Question Samba Problem : Win XP and Win98 Access Problems

Hi,

I have the following problem:
Installed Fedora 5 with Samba.

I have also a mixed Windows network with Win 98 and Win XP machines. With the current config only the two Win XP machines see the server in My Network Places and can connect to the shares. The Win 98 machines do see the Samba server in Network Neighbourhood, but as soon one wants to connect it says that the computername cannot be found.

This is my smb.conf file:
[global]
workgroup = NLA
server string = NLASRV
netbios name = NLASRV
hosts allow = 192.168.171. 127.
log file = /var/log/samba/log.smbd
log level = 2
max log size = 50
security = user
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
interfaces = 192.168.171.254/24
wins support = yes
dns proxy = no
idmap uid = 16777216-33554431
idmap gid = 16777216-33554431
template shell = /bin/false
winbind use default domain = no

[homes]
comment = Home Directories
browseable = no
writable = yes

[public]
path = /opt/nlasys
public = yes
only guest = no
writable = yes
browseable = yes
printable = no
create mask = 0666
directory mask = 0775

I also added lmhosts and hosts files to the Win 98 machines. I've done the regedit thingy about the plain passwords. I also changed the workgroup on the Win machines to point to NLA. I've setup the WINS on all the Win machines.

But still cannot connect from Win98.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Add a user on the Linux box, the name of the user that's trying to connect from the Windows box.
smbpasswd -add winuser
Ignore the password prompts by pressing enter.
Then restart samba, /sbin/service smb restart.
Now try to log in from Windows.

Sorry, forgot to mention. All the users were added with smbpasswd -a "username"

Does the user account actually exist on the Fedora box? As I recall, before I could access my Fedora box from a Windows box I needed to add an actual user account on the Fedora box. Keep in mind that I'm no samba guru. Just know what worked for me and trying to lend a hand.

RE : Samba Problem : Win XP and Win 98 Access Problems

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, a user was created for Unix as well as Samba.

I forgot also to mention that the firewall has open port for smbd and nmbd.
