Samba problem

Dear all,

i have problem with configuring my samba. i have came across some websites on this, but still can't make the thing works properly.

i have edited the /etc/samba/smb.conf file such as followed:

[global]
workgroup = MYNETWORK
netbios name = MYPC

[homes]
read only = no
browseable = no

[test]
path = /root/MyRootDocuments
browseable = yes
read only = no

After that, i restarted the service. /etc/rc.d/init.d smb restart

So, with this kind of configuration, i can see my PC on the Windows NT box. But, the problem is that i can't browse into the PC and look for the test folder..Windows yields an error: MYPC is not accessible, the network path was not found. However, i can surely ping to my pc with no problems at all.

so, pls give some words on this.. i am hoping to hear some advices from u guys...Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
yenonn

Did you chmod the directories that you are sharing?

If you didn't you'll have to use this command:

chmod 0777 directory name

This will give complete access to those directories to everyone on your network. If you don't want that change the numbers from 0777 to whatever access level you want to give.

You might need to set your Samba server up as a PDC. Search this forum for a smb.conf that is set up for a PDC there should be a good example.

Are you using Redhat?

It sounds as if your firewall is blocking communication with the Linux machine.

Type lokkit and configure the firewall to treat the network card (eth0) as a trusted device.

To avoid other issues, make sure that:

you have added the users to the passwd and smbpasswd files.

your windows and samba machines are in the same workgroup.

you have the line "encrypt passwords = yes" in the global section of your smb.conf file.

you add a hosts allow line to the smb.conf file. This will restrict access to your machine.
