samba..? network..? how..?
Hello all,
I've been a Microsoft fan for maaaaany years.. I'm brand - BRAND - new to the LINUX world - and - I have to admit - pretty impressed with the SuSE OS - so far..!
I'm trying to setup SuSE 9.1 Professional to work as a server to my Windows XP Professsional network via LAN..
Untill now I've managed to see my network - and I can also browse the internet - from the LINUX PC without any manual interference from myself..
But I can't see the LINUX PC from my Windows PC's..
I have 2 questions:
1: when I open the YaST and look into Network Services I see a lot of different server and client features... Which one do I need to activate to setup a network with SuSE working as a server for my WIN XP network..?
2: when a try to activate Samba Server (I've heard that this is the one to use for that kind of operations) it comes up with a message: need to install 'samba winbind' package..
OK - I try that - put into the CD drive the CD which is asked for - and the system comes back telling me that it's unable to install this feature..?!
That's it - unable to continue further..
Please respond with clear directions - and not too much insider terminology..
I suggest doing an Online Update in YaST in order to get all the latest RPMs (packages).
Then try again.
If it doesn't work, you can try to install it manually.
Go to ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.1/suse/i586/ and download the lastest Samba RPMs.
samba-3.0.2a-51.i586.rpm
samba-client-3.0.2a-51.i586.rpm
samba-winbind-3.0.2a-51.i586.rpm
Open a console window (command line) and become root by typing: su -
Go into the directory where you saved the downloaded RPMs using the cd command and type:

Mathieu,
Thanks for the help - it worked out fine..
I would like to ask you this though:
I downloaded the 3 files - and installed them from YaST (I couldn't get the Konsole shell to work, because it didn't find the files in my Home folder..? And I'm pretty blank within dos commands..)
Konsole window came up like this:
YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound
YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound
YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound
linux:~ #
..anyway - now I can open the Samba Server from YaST - Network Services..
I click - Enable Samba Server - default is File and printer sharing - says TUX NET in the domain line and Samba server in the description line - blank in NetBIOS..
I click Next - default is Share Homes and Share Printers..
I click Finish..
LINUX PC:
When I open my Home folder - and view the network tab - I click the + sign in front of Local Network - this error comes up from Konqueror:
Can't find parent item smb:/ in the tree. Internal error.
When I click directly upon Local Network I see two icons: All SLP Services and Windows Network..
Fine - I click Windows Network and see two icons - my Windows XP Network share which is named HOME - and another icon - TUX NET
When opening the HOME icon - I have access to all my shared files on network computers running MS OS..
When I click the TUX NET icon it comes up with this error:
Share could not be found on given server
From my Windows PC's I am now able to see - in the MS Windows Network structure - the icon TUX NET from the LINUX PC..! Which is an improvement - I never was able to do that before - first time I see it from the WIN PC's..
OK - so now it looks like I can view both directions MS PC's and Linux PC - vise versa..
WINDOWS XP PC:
When I click the TUX NET icon on my Windows PC I get an error message that Tux Net is not accessible - that I might not have permission etc.. And that the device is not connected..
What to do about that..?
And also I would like to have all PC's to use the same domain name - HOME - but I suspect this is a bad name because it interferes with the default naming of the Home folder on the LINUX PC..?

Oouups..
After a restart of the LINUX PC - and opening the HOME folder, Network tab and clicking on Local Network - I now see only the WIN network workgroup name - HOME.. An I'm still able to access all shares on WIN PC's..from the LINUX PC..
I'm not sure how to setup a valid share from SuSE 9.1 to join my HOME workgroup on my WIN PC's..
And - I must admit that it's still very confusing which ones to work with of all the features: Clients, Servers etc.. in YaST - Network Services..?

Well - well - I've come to this:
Now I can see the Linux share on my WIN PC - in the Network.. There is a user folder and a groups folder in the Linux share..
When I try to open these I get a prompt for username and password..?
How to proceed..?
(as far as I'm aware I haven't setup any password on the Linux PC apart from the one I use to log into the root - and I only use root - have not setup any user accounts)
Next thing is that I'm now unable to connect to the WIN network from the LINUX PC..?!
As mentioned previously - I was able to connect to the WIN 'HOME' network - but now - when I click on Windows Network I get this error message from Konqueror:
Internal Error

If you are using KDE, the console is called Kconsole.
you can find it in the menu under System -> Terminal
For Samba, you will need to create a Linux user account.
Once you have found the console (terminal) and created a Linux user,
you will have to create a Samba user. Type:
Code:
smbpasswd -a my_username
Make sure the Linux user and the Samba user have the same password.
The Samba configuration file is /etc/samba/smb.conf
Here is an example of a simple Read-Only Samba share which allows everyone access.
Code:
[MyShare]
