Samba help
 

I have a problem with running my samba server. I have fedora running on a seperate computer. For the past couple of days i have been trying to get samba to work right on my machine. The problem is that when i get samba set up, and i want my winodws xp/2k3 machines to get access to the machine, i get an error message saying that "\\linux is not accessable. pleae contact the administrator for permission......" Another issue is that when i have my fedora server set up for the samba client to gain access to my windows shares, i do not have a list of the computers in the lan browser. I have lisa set up for my workgroup. but i get no list, except the linux box just shows up. Also sometimes one of the windows machines is able to see the server, but when i click on the server to gain access, i get brought up a windows for the user and password. I have the user in the smbuser file and also in the smbpasswd file. But when i type it in, i cant gain access to the files, it will just refuse input. I cant get to my smb.conf file right now, but i will post it later on in the day when i get the chance. If someone can offer me suggestions or help me as best as they can, it would be much appreciated.

trying usingg linuxconf or a similar GUI util to configure it. igot both a samba server and client working fine between 2000 server and fedora. only for basic file access i might add.

I have tried using the swat, webman and the fedora config utility to get the smaba server going. each one has lead to the same problem. The windows machines are not able to access the linux shares. I just keep getting the same error. And i find it odd that the linux server can not access the shares on either of the winodws boxes i have set up, as well as a mac os 10.3 machine i have running as well. Is there anything i can check to see what is up or anything i should try to get it to work.

you checked the smb service is running?

in fedora you can go to network services and check there or go to:

/etc/init.d and do a ./smb restart

and see what happens.

as long as samba is configured and the service is listening you should see something. unless you've got some firewall running which is blocking something?

One of the first things i have done was to see if the smb service was running. And it is. I have restarted it many of times, i also have checked the smb config file with testpram command and it came back fine.

I have the same issue and have no clue how to resolve it.

I have not found a solution to the problem. I did end up formating my one win xp box for a bi-yearly maintaince. So far the windows machine hasnt been acting funny with the windows box. I hav not tested it fully, but i am able to go further than i was before. So it must be a windows problem. Not sure what though.

Actually, I've been messing around with it all night and have made some progress.

I'm using the default setup from Fedora Core 1 and I was experiencing the same problems as Garrett.

In Windows XP, I changed the details of my LAN connection to use my samba server as a WINS server, and changed the NETBIOS setting to Default. Both these options are under the WINS tab under the Advanced settings.

These changes allowed me to view the samba share from my WinXP pro machine.

Now I just need to fix the problem of being unable to view my Windows share from my linux machine (which was working before... :mad: )
