Samba filesytem doesnt start on boot

I always get a message on boot that my samba file system is unused !
I think that by editing the smbfstab file i can get this to work.

Trouble is i dont understand what entries to add.
The manual is way over my head!

could anyone post a copy of their smbfstab so that i might have an example at least?

Thanks

Mike

mpooley.

i am not sure if this helps but since no one else has responded!

i use the following in my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file to get my samba shares up, warning this is not real secure! but it works like a gem!

this line is for my windows c - drive to be mounted under /mnt/samba/somewhere/c

mount -t smbfs -o username=edward,password=secret //windoze_machine/C$ /mnt/samba/somewhere/c/

just modify this line and copy it for other shares!

hope this may help u

PS rc.local is the last thing to be executed b4 X starts up!

Thanks for reply

I havn't got a rc.local file though! it seems that on this distro (Suse 8.1) that they use the init.d.config file instead.
so i tried putting your line in there but it didn't work unfortunately.

what does the c$ bit mean? i just copied that! was i supposed to substitute something here?

thanks again

mike

nah, the "$" is just something i used to get it to work!! try it with or without!!

no rc.local file?!....just whack it in some file that gets executed at boot time!

just try it from the command line, if it works there then use it in a file, i previously used it remotely to access my windoze box, play around with the mount command.

anyway...sorry i cant be much help! (never used Suse b4, must give it a go one day!)

Hi mpooley:

You can use
smbmount
-ousername=<username>,password=<password>
//<ipaddress>/<share-name> /<mount-point>

For example
smbmount -ousername=guest,password=guest
//10.0.0.1/share /mnt/smbshare

In the previous post reply, $ means default share by Windows, by default Windows shares all drives(C,D,...)

Regards,
Valluvan.

sorry I havn't replied for a while but my system crashed twice!

I'm not sure why, but KDE froze and corrupted my file system so bad i had to reinstall . Then again today i was trying to get my network up when i tried altering my smbfstab file again, rebooted and got the same errors as before!
so I've had to re-install again!

now i am very surprised about this as i thought Linux was supposed to be ultra stable?
it's not a hardware fault as my XP sytem is on the same disk and has been working fine.

do you think it could possible be anything to do with smbfstab?
both times it crashed I had been trying out variations of syntax trying to get smbd and nmbd running at boot?
