samba - creating network user account

Running Suse 9.0 pro, Is there a way to add samba account with out creating local users. Intention is to create shares on my linux box accessible by windows users and not have local account to the Suse box. Network users only. That way the clients have no login rights just file rights If so please state how this can be done! Thanks in advance for the detailed responses!!

I think they should create a Samba Forum Only

The way I understand it is that to create a samba account, they must also have a linux account on the same machine. I might be wrong but I'm sure I read that somewhere.

I agree with you about the SAMBA forum too.

you are supposed to edit the [HOME] share and disable it.

I have my /tmp directory sharable right now.

Users of Samba Server shares do not have to have a local account.

you just enable anonymous login for your shared folder or "share"

That would be great for users to share the same password and login, but I am aiming for different directories with different rights. Trying to keep the users to see only what they need to see and nothing more

If you are running separate logins for each user, you need some way to authenticate them. What method are you using?

if you are using winxp (and perhaps this works with 2000), then you can possibly add direct network authentication by doing
smbpasswd -r IP.OF.WIN.BOX -a user_on_windows

no matter what, though, you need to have some authentication through the smbpasswd file; even anonymous login must use it
