Samba as a windows domain controller

I am trying to configure samba to act as a PDC. Originally I had samba 2.2.7 installed and I could join the domain but after a reboot, when I tried to logon I received an error saying that a DC could not be found. After trying about a billion things including a registry edit on the XP side, I upgraded to samba 3.0.2. Now I cannot even join the domain. It finds the DC and requests for a privileged username and password, I give it root and root's pwd and It says the username could not be found. However I can browse the smb shares on the server with root no problem. Does anyone have any ideas? TLDP has nothing nor does samba.org. Does anyone have this working? It's 12:30 and I think I'll go to be now...I lost...this battle.

Thanks,
Thomas

Thomas,

try smbpasswd -a root
use the root pass word in /etc/passwd
