Is there a SIMPLE, yet complete tutorial online for configuring Samba to work on/with a Windows network? I have read articles, online books, posted to newsgroups and forums like this (including this one), and still I can not get the two to share in both directions. I mean one with explanations of terminology, for newbies. Not just saying it, but explaining it. I am sick of buying the thick computer books, bringing them home and finding they have EVERYthing I need-except the answer, then having the book sit on a shelf.
Distro is either Redhat 8, SUSE 8 or Mandrake 9.
I mean a very thorough tutorial, start to finish, with a troubleshooting section.
well you've done everything right so far reading asking questions thats always the best way everyone has to start somewhere and your the samba docs that come with the install have lots of valuable tips and starter hints I was the same way 1-1/2 ago Im no expert by all means but I can now say I ve been there and done that just follow the examples to the T and go from there maybe the problem lies in basic networking 2 P/C's need a crossovercable are your NIC's working youve left us with no real means of helping you what errors do you get? help us to help you
It's quite funny how difficult I first found Samba...
Lots of jargon written by knowledgeable people that was way over my head, yet with a bit of preserverence I got the whole thing to work.
It's not a Domain controller, but it shares files to W$N 2000 and W$n 98 pcs.
Then, hot on the heels of a fresh RH8 install, people are telling me they can see me on the Lan...
So something works out there, despite our help...
There's nothing easy about the Micro$oft networking policy.
Your decision is whether you want to be a user or a technician.
It can be made to work, or you can see how a working one actually does it.
I found the help file that comes with swat to be a great reference.
Stick at it, the rewards are tremendous.
Regards,
Peter
