running BIND on broadband connection - Domains not working

Hi All, I have problems with BIND working over broadband, hopefully you can help.

OK heres the problem. I've set up a domain plll dot co dot uk and I have control over the nameservers. I've setup the nameservers to both point to my static IP at home. I've got the following setup:

ns1-ptheobald dot merseine dot nu and ns2-ptheobald dot merseine dot nu both point to my static IP. I've set these up as my nameservers. I know this is technically wrong but that doesn't appear to be causing problems and I don't need the redundancy.

on my home box i'm running BIND behind an IPCOP firewall. I've got IPCOP forwarding port 53 on tcp and udp to the box runnig bind. This is working fine and I can query the server with DIG and its returning fine.

I also have apache running on the same box with the correct port forwarding running and this isn't working. I am assuming my ISP may be blocking port 80 which isn't listed in their t+c's but thats another matter.

If I do an nslookup on my laptop I get a domain name not found when I look for www dot plll dot co dot uk. If I do the same from my work computer I get the same. However, if I check the same at dnsstuff.com I get the correct answers and dnsreport.com tells me that everything is fine with my DNS. However, the timings on dnsstuff.com say that the last hop to my dns server is taking over 1.3s. My dns server at work has a timeout of 2s so its timing out. Is this likely and if so what can I do to speed up my DNS. My broadband line is currently pretty much idle. Theres no one home and theres no inbound traffic that could be slowing this down. It is accessible by ip address if you do a traceroute to ns1-ptheobald dot merseine dot nu it gets through fine from my work computer.

But what I notice.. is the part in bold print. Could it simply be that your registration hasn't been activated yet?
If that is in error i'd contact uk2.net and ask what the holdup is.

the uk nic take a while to actually process requests but they do activate them pretty fast. If you check the domain in dnsstuff.com it gives full details of my dns setup including successfully requesting details from my name server running at home. Its definitely working just not working well enough.

I figured something out with this. I'd turned on traffic shaping on my ipcop firewall but got the uplink and downlink speeds crossed over. Basically the box was pooling data to upload at 2M even though it was uploading at 256K and then throttling the download at 256K with a 2M actual downlink speed. I can't work out why this would cause the problem i kept seeing with the last hop in the dns taking so long but changing it back fixed the dns problem for me.
