Routing Tables Incorrect

I am having a problem getting networking setup correctly with ubuntu linux on a corporate-size windows/novell network. Using DHCP, the linux system does determine network settings and does work, but the routing tables are wrong (how it still works is beyond me). It is routing to servers that, as far as I can tell, do not exist. I believe this has something to do with ipv6, which I tried to disable using this guide, but the problem persists.

Moreover, the system needs a static IP. I set up the static ip with the correct dns, gateway, etc and it will not work (read: can't ping anything)(and yes, the static ip is set up on the dns server).

Is there a way to force a custom routing table? Or, preferably, just make it work the way it is supposed to!

OK what are you trying to setup IPv4 or IPv6? If its v4 then forget about v6, they are totally different and should not interfere with each other. Forget DNS for the minute. If you can't ping local devices then DNS is screwed anyway. Remember DNS runs on top of IP, it is a higher layer function, no IP no DNS.

Go through the normal process.

Is the IP address in the correct subnet?
Is the subnet mask the same on all hosts on that subnet?
Is the IP address a unique host on that subnet?
Is the broadcast address correct for the subnet? If you entered a non classfull mask the broadcast address is normally wrongly guessed and you must set it manually.

If these things are correct you should be able to ping any host in the same subnet.

If you can't, use the "arp" command to check that your hosts is getting arp responses from the destination device. If it isn't then something more serious than IP config is wrong.

Make sure that you can ping your default gateway remeber it must be a member of the same subnet to route for you.

Once this bit is correct you now need to check that the default gateway is set correctly. And then check that 'route' shows the default route 0.0.0.0 pointing at the default gateway address.

You should now be able to ping hosts on other subnets.

If you want the addressing checked then post the output of 'ipconfig' and 'route'
