router config problem

Suddenly i became unable to connect to my SpeedStream router modem config page (192.168.254.254).
Since i was already planning a linux format, i decided to do it yesterday. But i still can't connect to it (192.168.254.254);
i went to windoze and the same problem occurs....i tried to reinstall the router firmware but the program said "can't connect to server", "contact your vendor"...
what is happening? i can connect normally to internet!
Is it possible that someone broke into my system and changed something?
i can ping the router, and nmap it says that tcp/8000 - http-alt is open! the system is a desktop whitout any web or network services!
Help please
