m facing a problem, actually i have installed ESXi 4.0 n installed RHEL5, Ubuntu and Sun Solaris 10 over it.. solaris and ubutnu machines working perfectly and are able to access internet but RHEL5 machine is even unable to ping its own default gateway.. ping to 127.0.0.1 and own ip are succesfull but while pinging default gateway m getting "Destination host unreachable" from machines own ip.. i have checked all the settings and confirmed each and every fact about network configuration but not getting success to overcome this issue... please help me out to overcome this...
thanks for ur kind responses but problem is still there... link is detecting but when i run tracert it shows "*" (stars)only for next 30 hops n nothing is coming out...
Try this. "route add -net 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0 gw Your-host-Default-Gateway-IP". I got the same problem on the RHEL54 host on VMware guest OS, and it works after adding this new route.
And check with "route -n" and you should see new entry for the above.
From there you can ping to other network from your host or you can ssh to this RHEL host from other systems.
I hope this help for you.
P.S. This new route is for the Ethernet interface (eth0 mostly) which is connected to your Default-Gateway.
