I'm a Linux Newbie - trying to learn about it.
I want to set up a Linux fileserver and web host for my home network (i.e. behind my firewall). I can't access the Linux servers from Wintel network properly - help!
I got a Dell 420 workstation with twin 1Ghz PIII cpus, 256Mb, 40G on IDE and 20G on SCSI. Bridged to my WiFi Wintel (W98 and XP mixture) network like this:
LinuxBox - WiredHub - WiFiAP/Bridge - WintelPCs(WinProxy/ApacheWin) - SatModem - Net
I installed Win XP and RedHat 9 (pretty much a complete install) using GRUB dual boot.
Now... The Linux box gets its IP address from Winproxys DHCP service (I think).
From the Linux box: I can browse the Internet using Mozilla. I can ping the wintel boxes using their names or their IP internal addresses. I can browse the Windows Apache server. I can browse the Linux Apache.
From the Windows boxes. I can ping the Linux box using it's IP address (but not it's name - DNS confusion here - don't know where the host/domain should be specified). BUT, I can't browse Linux Apache, even using the IP address - I don't even get a server error message just IEs page not found thing. I can't get to the samba server; I can see it in Network Neighborhood, but I get "path not available" when I try and open it.
Perhaps unrelated, I can't seem to get Linux Apache to run a simple perl script that works fine in a tty terminal window and in Windows Apache - Apache error log says "premature end of script headers" but no other clue where the problem is.
Lot of stuff here, I know - hope someone can make sense of it.
I feel some of this has to do with the network config - DNS and all that - but I don't want to disable DHCP and use fixed IPs on my Wintel boxes. I'm stumped. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Regards, Ian
