Angry RH freezes when network card is plugged in

I'm using a Linksys WUSB11 v2.6, I know none of you probably have this card, but hopefully it's something generic.

If I have the card plugged in while my computer is starting it locks up at the part "bringing up eth0 interface" if I set ifcfg-eth0 to not start the eth0 interface at startup it locks up when mounting root filesystem. If I plug it in once the computer has started it locks up.
I'm running kernel 2.4.20 with RedHat 8. If I use the 2.4.18-14 kernel it doesn't lock up, but it doesn't bind vnetusbr to the card, which it did do in 2.4.20. I need to use 2.4.20, but it always locks up, any ideas?

Yeah, it still locks up. I have noticed something really weird though, if ifcfg-eth0 only has the DEVICE, onfiltered and BOOTPROTO lines, and if .vnetrc doesn't have anything set and if the Red Hat Network Control Program is set to use a static IP my computer will start with the USB adapter plugged in! If I make any changes to any of those files and restart it, it will stop working.
I was able to get on the internet last night by configuring everything and then running /etc/init.d/network restart instead of restarting the computer.

I was able to get it working doing that last night, but now even if those files are the way they should be it doesn't work, I think somehow I created/edited another file last night by running lvnet or netconfig, and I have to edit that one.
