RH 9.1 as router/web/ftp/etc

Greetings all,

I'm a relatively competent computer user, being around since dos 5.0 - But Linux is not something I am overtly familiar with, though I can manage to get around the system more or less.

Anywho - My question..

I have a spare Celeron 433 with 192 megs of ram and a 2 gig drive that I would like to setup as a router mainly, but I would also like to setup a webserver/ftp server on it as well.

WAN (non static) -> Router/Web/Ftp -> LAN

I've got the net connection going on the system (it was ohhhhh so difficult with DHCP *cough*) and i've got two nics in it, one going to the cable modem and one going into a port on the hub (not the uplink port).

Annnnddd...That's about as much as I know how to do. :P

Was wondering if anyone would be willing to contribute some instructions or refer me to something that would explain it to me in non nasa terms, also curious as to opinions on the security of a system setup like this. I would obviously prefer to have a seperate system for web/ftp, but I do not have one. This is not going to be a busy server, it's more of a personal project/get myself used to linux system that will serve as a router.

Many thanks in advance,

miR

I think the redhat docs are pretty good. Check out the website - they are available online or for download and will explain how to set up apache and vsftpd (tho I would suggest using OpenSSH instead of ftp for security reasons). Some decent overall guides to get you started - I'd grab the whole set.

I would never put additional software on a router, but if this is a non-critical system that you are using to learn...hard to argue with that.

Could you perhaps link me to the portions your are speaking of, or if not possible, give me a chapter/page number/whatever there may be? I spent the evening last night looking through redhat docs and didn't find anything that told me how to do it as much as what it was I was doing.

Thanks,

miR

miR i posted a long Router setup post that still shows up on the 1st page
of the forum's Thread list. check out the one that says Router...here is the link:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=62907

there are many more threads on the same issue, just do a search
for "router" on this site, you should get a lot of hits.

MAKE SURE YOU CORRECT THE ERRORS IF YOU USE NATing or
MASQUERADING-->> i posted the changes in the same thread but
did not correct the thread itself (got lazy).

For a web server, red hat comes with apache....hope you installed it.

in rh 7.3 everything already comes ready to go, just edit
the stuff in /var/www/html for web pages
and /etc/httpd/conf for server config stuff
you can start the server by doing the following:

/etc/init.d/httpd start

then surf to http://localhost to see if you get the test page

check out http://apache.org for docs and info

i have never setup and FTP server....but im sure its pretty easy.

also, for server administration of all your severs rolled into a nice
web interface:

http://webmin.com it bailed me out of a sendmail problem.
