RH 8.0 ADSL troubles

Has anyone out there had any luck getting pppoe working reliably on a Red Hat 8.0 system? I did a command line only install a few days ago, with the intention of using the box as a router/firewall/webserver for my home network.

I'm able to get DSL up and running but after a while (minutes, ususally), the connection drops. I can usually get it going again, but it's not nearly as reliable as a floppy based solution that I've been using for several months. The main reason I'm moving to a full distro is that I want to host a webserver and spend some quality time learning iptables.

I'm using Roaring Penguins pppoe client, version 3.5-1. According to Roaring Penguin's website, the pppoe RPM distributed by Red Hat has been mangled so as to be difficult to use without the gui tools, but the I upgraded to the version from RP's site, and I'm having the same problems. Any ideas?

I wouldn't use RH8.0 for that. Try either Slack or Debian for that purpose( there are other distros too, search www.distrowatch.com).

Ok, I'm not averse to that. Which distro do people recommend, AND WHY? The why is probably more important than the what, especially as is relates to a text-only installation, like I plan on using.

Thanks.

I am not an exepert in distributions, but from what I have tested, debian is formated for server purposes( not bloated). You dont want tons of stuff running that you dont need (this is what RH 8.0 does and that is why it runs slower).

There is also another distro called Trustix. I havent followed it for a while, but it is supposed to be a little more secure.
Another very optimized distro is Crux! www.crux.nu!!

Thanks! I think I'm gonna try Slackware 8.1. I've always thought that Red Hat was bloated, but it worked, and I was too lazy to deal with learning a different distro. Now that it's not doing what I want it to, I guess I have an excuse to go out and gain some knowledge.

Wish me luck!
