Resolver problem: ping localhost.localdomain gives Unknown host

Hi all.
Please, I need your help:
I have an annoying problem with a linuxbox i'm building almost from scratch
I can ping the outside world by name or by IP, but i cannot ping localhost.localdomain, nor linuxbox (which is my hostname)
Indeed, I can ping my own IP or 127.0.0.1, and I can succesfully ping localhost (but not localhost.localdomain)
Par example:

linuxbox:#ping localhost ->PING localhost (127.0.0.1): succesful
linuxbox:#ping localhost.localdomain -> Unknown host
linuxbox:#ping google.com -> PING google.com (216.239.57.99) : success
linuxbox:#ping linuxbox -> Unknown host
linuxbox:#ping linuxbox.localdomain -> Unknown host
linuxbox:#ping 10.2.10.201 (my own IP) -> success

linuxbox:#hostname -> linuxbox
My setup is:

/etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 10.2.10.50 (the nameserver for my network)

/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
10.2.10.201 linuxbox.localdomain linuxbox

/etc/host.conf
order hosts, bind

/etc/nsswitch.conf (the relevant part only)
hosts: files dns

And, lastly, the relevant libraries in my /lib are:
libnss1_files-2.2.4.so
libnss_dns-2.2.4.so
libresolv-2.2.4.so
(and, of course, libc-2.2.4.so, ld-2.2.4.so, libdl-2.2.4.so, libcryptc, libdb-4.1, libm-2.2.4.so, libncurses.so.5.3, libpam.so.0.77, libpam_misc.so.0.77) and nothing else.
I need to start proftpd, which bombs with a "FATAL: Unable to determine address of linuxbox" which I'm pretty sure is a related issue.
The rest of the system is built around Busybox 1.0.0pre

TIA
