remote use of internet connection

I've got an internet gatway server + firewall connecting several lan-side pcs. The gateway itself is an old pentium1 machine running 2.4 kernel.

What I would like to be able to do is access this box remotely (from the internet) and securely (encrypted) in order to use the internet connection. This is because at work they have strict rules about internet access provided locally.

1. can this be done?

2. if i were to set this up, is there any way that local IT dept. could
monitory this traffic?

Are you trying to work around their restrictions? Could you not set up your server as a proxy and set your browser to use it? Try looking on sourceforge for proxy, there are loads of programs. You'd maybe have to use an obscure port to get around their restrictions but I don't know if this would work.
