Remote Setup of Samba for File Server for WinXP Network
Hi All
Im still only new to Linux, know my way around a little bit, but still need some help. I have an old Pentium 450 with 192Mb of RAM, and I'm trying to set it up as a File Store for my Windows XP Network.
Each of the computers on the network belongs to a different person, and presently we share files using Windows file sharing. This has become inefficient with everybody having multiple copies of the one file. To aleviate this, Im setting up a file server, mainly to store our numerous music and video files.
I installed Debian 3.0r1 from a Magazine Cover CD, and chose to install the File Server option from the TASKSEL part of the setup.
I now need to know 3 things.
1. How can I do all my setup and admin remotely? I was asked about SSH2 during setup, and I chose to install SSHD so that I could connect using this. Now I just need to know what Windows program allows me to do this
2. What do I need to do to the SMB.CONF file in order to allow the 4 WinXP computers to gain access to a shared file space on the Debian Server
3. Since running setup, I have added another Hard Disk Drive. From what I can tell it has been recognised. How can I check whether it has or not?
Thanks for any help that anyone can be. It is much appreciated
First question:- You will have to install cygwin or similar program on your windows machine.
Second question:- You may find this and this samba howtos very useful.
Third question:- It may have already recognised the added harddisk. You just need to format and mount it (If it is unformatted) or just mount it if it is preformatted.
