Remote home directory - pros & cons?

I was just wondering if there are any particular advantages/disadvantages to having /home mounted remotely via NFS/SMB/whatever. Here is my situation:

- I have several PC's running (mostly) Gentoo linux
- Several different Desktop Environments/Window Managers are in use
- All Gentoo boxes do not have all of the same software installed

The main question:
Will all of my Desktop Environments/Window Managers work appropriately?

If there are any other issues I should be wary of, please don't hesitate to say so.

TIA

I would tend to say that unless all of your machines are identical then you would be better keeping your home directory on a local partition then mount a directory such as "docs" or "files" beneath it. Things like kde keep specific config files that may change format between versions. These files may also be accessed frequently and occasionally locked so having them local isn't a bad thing.

If there are things that you want a common config for, perhaps mplayer for example, create a config directory beneath your remote mount "~/files/config" then store your .mplayer configuration directory there and link it back to your local home "ln -s ~/files/config/.mplayer ~/".

it should work out fine. maybe a little security thing. don't use your root accounts to connect remotely.
