Remote Desktop in Ubuntu over internet with Linksys routers. Setup help?

I need serious help setting up Remote Desktop, as it is not as easy as it was described to me. I'm an avid Mac user and I dabble in Linux (Ubuntu Distro) from time to time. I'm trying to connect to a computer thats about 50 miles away over the internet. My computer is running OSX, I also have a computer running XP Pro and Ubuntu Edgy. The computer that I want to connect to is running Ubuntu Edgy only.

What I know: I have to use two routers (one on each end) and port forward from port 23.

What I don't know:

1. How do I do this in a Linksys router? (both are WRT54G models)
2. How do I know what address to connect to?
3. Any other doo-dads that I may need and have not covered!

HELP! I'm going crazy!

Well, to be fair this is not a Linux question at all really. You are asking about how to configure your router.

You need to log into the router's configuration on both sides, go to the "Applications & Gaming" tab, and then add a rule to forward port 23 to the machine on the local network you want to connect to/from.

MS3FGX, Although the question is not specifically about linux it is appropriate in the networking forum and does involve linux systems.

EchelonHigh, Welcome to LQ!

For No.2 it depends if you have a static or dynamic IP. If it is dynamic then you may want to look into a free dynamic dns service to help you out.
